TODAY'S EDGE

Most people treat a pause as a setback. In money, in markets, in careers, a pause is often the only moment worth examining closely. The instinct to keep moving costs more than the pause ever would have.

THE BRIEF

In the News

Canada Tariff Pause Comes With Strings

The 50 percent tariff on Canadian goods got a three-day pause after the White House announced a deal framework was in place. The reprieve is narrow, conditional, and does nothing to resolve the underlying dispute. Businesses on both sides of the border that repriced supply chains around the tariffs now face a second round of uncertainty before the ink is even dry.

In Health

Short Sprints Match Long Runs on Heart Risk

Brief sprint intervals release nearly the same heart-protective proteins as a 90-minute endurance session. That protein response is what drives the reduction in type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease risk. The implication for people who claim they have no time to exercise is harder to dodge than it used to be.

In Business

Costco Is Coming for Senior Healthcare

Costco is partnering with SCAN Health Plan to offer Medicare-linked insurance products, including pharmacy, vision, and dental coverage. It is the first move of its kind for the warehouse retailer, and it puts Costco directly in competition with pharmacy chains that have spent years building health services. The more interesting pressure falls on traditional insurers, who suddenly have a competitor with 76 million loyal cardholders and a reputation for low prices.

MONEY SHARP

Liquidity Premium

A liquidity premium is the extra return investors demand for holding something they cannot easily sell. The harder an asset is to exit quickly, the higher the expected reward needs to be.

Think of a private real estate fund with a five-year lockup versus a publicly traded REIT you can sell any Tuesday. The private fund typically offers higher projected returns, and that gap is partly the liquidity premium at work.

Most people chase yield without asking what they are giving up in flexibility. When markets turn fast, illiquid holdings become a trap, not an opportunity.

Before chasing a higher return, ask how long you could survive without touching that money.

This is not financial advice. Always do your own research.

MONEY TIP

You Are Probably Underusing Your HSA

A Health Savings Account is the only account in the tax code that is triple tax-advantaged, yet most people treat it like a medical checking account.

Contributions go in pre-tax, growth is tax-free, and withdrawals for qualified expenses are also tax-free. Most HSA holders spend the balance down each year instead of letting it compound.

Pay small medical bills out of pocket when you can afford to. Let the HSA balance invest and grow untouched for years, then reimburse yourself later using saved receipts.

Try it today: Log into your HSA provider, find the investment options tab, and move any balance above your minimum threshold into an index fund today.
