Your Memory Started Slipping Before You Noticed

TODAY'S EDGE

Memory starts slipping earlier than most people expect, which means the habits you build at 40 matter more than the ones you plan for 60. The window most people think is still open is already closing.

THE BRIEF

In the News

Surfer Murders Finally Head to Trial

Two years after American and Australian surfers were shot dead in Baja California, their accused killers are finally in a Mexican courtroom. The case became a flashpoint for foreign-traveler safety in Mexico, drawing diplomatic attention well beyond a typical homicide trial. The proceedings will test whether Mexico's judicial system can deliver a verdict that satisfies both domestic legal standards and intense international scrutiny.

In Health

Your Memory Is Already Declining

Cognitive decline begins in middle age, not in the late 60s as most people assume, according to new research tracking memory over time. This shifts the relevant intervention window by roughly two decades, which makes lifestyle choices in your 40s the actual leverage point. The practical implication is uncomfortable: the time to build protective habits is before you notice any problem, not after.

In Business

Some Republicans Now Want a Tax Hike

With the Social Security trust fund on a collision course with insolvency, a notable faction of Republican lawmakers is now supporting a payroll tax increase to prevent benefit cuts. That is a significant rhetorical shift for a party that has treated tax hikes as a third rail for decades. The more interesting tension is what this signals for retirement planning: if benefit reductions stay on the table as a fallback, anyone within twenty years of retirement is holding a position that may look very different at payout.

LOOK SHARP

Double Monks Are Back, and This Time They Mean It

The double monk strap is making a harder return than its usual cameo appearance.

It has cycled through menswear for years as a dress-shoe alternative, but this iteration is different. It is showing up in wider-last constructions on heavier soles, pairing with the unstructured tailoring and relaxed trousers that currently dominate European and Japanese street style. The buckle detail reads as intentional rather than fussy in that context.

This one has enough structural grounding to last past one season. Worth attention, not urgency.

STYLE TIP

Your Watch Strap Is Doing More Work Than You Think

A strap swap is the fastest way to shift a watch from formal to casual, or the reverse.

Most men buy a watch and wear it on the bracelet or strap it shipped with indefinitely. That is the equivalent of wearing only one tie with a suit forever. The strap material sets the register of the whole wrist: a NATO on a dress watch reads careless, a polished leather on a sport watch reads confused.

Pick one watch you wear regularly and buy one alternative strap in a different material that matches how you actually dress most days.

GROOMING NOTE

– Clean the inside of your watch strap weekly. Sweat and skin oils accumulate fast and read as neglect up close.

– For leather straps, a very light wipe with a barely damp cloth is enough. Do not soak it.

– Check the spring bars every few months. A dropped watch is a worse problem than an ugly strap.
